I'm not a leprechaun

I'm too sticky for a double take, you only get one.

This one stare balances on the edge of disgust's first cousin "intrigue" and amity's bastard child "envy"

Im not a leprechaun ahh, that is a stereotype, well I guess since we are so hard to spot, you would only know that shalalie toting attention whore, not that I don't enjoy this attention

I'm beauty's messenger (and ex lover)

I just thought I'd tell you since I've got for the briefest moment of surprising disbelief: your gonna die and before you do you CAN live, give yourself license to...the treasure is trying

That's it, I know everyone always expects more!

Stop looking at me so I can do the poof thing
Hahahahaaaaaaa

Simple Man

I may seem simple amidst the storms of this life,
but no matter what collects around me
I will stand simply waiting on you.

The walls may explode
and the gray areas will absolutely distort truth
but my walk will not falter
and I will step closer.

Look at me, a frail man,
a skinny kid warrior
ready for you.
Always ready for you.
Im nothing but bones
but that means you see it all.
No veins,
no heart,
no brains to get in the way
just my bare for you.

Look at what's around me.
Crazy kid circle drawings,
a life so nervous it couldn't stay in the lines.
Im simply a mess for you.

Ill keep on this way till you join me

An Eccentric Apparition

Beclouded is the dance silhouette.
And how it dances! Expanding through air
studded with experiences, shining.
The person and its phantom reversing
roles, practicing polished poses, discreet.
Acting out tomorrow’s incidentals,
perfecting those responses, avoiding
surprises, fathoming the unknown future
through poised body language. And then she stops,
eyes fall to floor, mirroring the image--
her beclouded doppelganger looks up
and asks: How far down the rabbit hole
do you want to go?

The Torch Singer

Oh, the places I have been; dark, lonely, uncharted
So long in darkness that my eyes began to adjust
Adjusting so long that my body began to adapt
Adapting so long that my heart began to harden

In the distance

The birth of a star
The squashing of gas and dust in the middle of a cold dark cloud
Bringing forth illumination
Lighting the darkest corners of life
No shadow left to conceal
No dusty corners in which to hide

Now, no matter my travels, she burns bright enough to lead me home:
my northern star

The point by which I navigate all of life’s journey’s
She does not lay in wait
She moves,
her light tracing and trailing her path

It remains that wherever she stands:
there lies home
here, there, or at the end of the universe.

Let's get weird.

What if the calm before the storm happened with my agenda in mind?  Well, it DID.  That's precisely why I ask.  I prove my own points because that's what I DO.  I set it AND I spike it.  Take say, this pineapple gum that I'm sticking to the bottom of my shoe right now.  My karmic future sees only silver lining bro.  I see all the stops and call all your shots for you.  Vodka! See?  I kick first and drink water never.  My name was Bruce Lee until I changed it to YOUR MOM IS BRUCE LEE.  Bam!  Pay attention because I rock shit.  Like Bruce Springstein.  I used a second Bruce because I'm rolling through my mental Rolodex and I'm chilling in the B's.  I'm floating through my lazy river of B awesomeness, DUDE.  I'll hop out in a minute and dry off next to Charlie Chaplin on a bench because THAT'S HOW I ROLL.  I get DOWN.  I'll hang with Don Corlione and Don King in the SAME AFTERNOON. Test me but don't doubt me.  I'll go for a drive with Fara Faucet while listening to Fiona Apple.  I'll lasso an Iguana Indiana Jones style in Ingrid Michaelson's BACK YARD!  Then I'll go to her front yard and ICE SKATE with my hommie I THINK YOU GET THE POINT.   Now are we going out tonight or what, bro? Let's get weird...

prelude to a bachelor party weekend

one hundred what and don't let this view go away!  that's what i would say to life if it sent me this real life still life of everything dull and beautiful and dumb and thought provoking because that is how we artists roll up and down the pants of society neglecting what was fashionable in nineteen seventy and so and so says is coming back in style with gusto like when i rode my first bike although i now forget the color which is of course the point we all say with our beers in the air staring at the sunset and the trees and the humming of the short life span having birds who don't mind so much our yelling which much like theirs is pure and abundant and necessary.

Dirty Bird

I see,
through the chain-linked fence of my old stomping grounds:
A dirty, grayish-white bird with a black beak and pencil legs.
Dried gum scattered around.
Some of it black from the sun.
Grass growing through cracks.
Not black at all, but green.
There are ripples in the water where the dirty birdy stands, reflecting his image.
For himself?
Or for the world to see?
The dirty bird can fly. He can do whatever he wants with his life. So can I.  Well, not fly, but, you know...
Tell stories,
Love moments,
Create memories,
Treasure relationships,
Follow impulses,
Listen to my instinct,
Take risks...
or
I can do nothing.
I can live a life of passion, or I dream of living a life of passion. Only dreams, but no action.
I reflect on the bird's reflection which has inspired my reflecting. I weigh my options.  I make a choice.  I am an actor. I act.  All dreams must become actions.
I hope you will join me.
From this day forward, let our dreams become actions.
Let us all act out.
Thank you, dirty bird.

She has his eyes.

My daughter wears her mother's necklace and calls me Pappy.
Pappy was her Irish grandfather on her mother's side.
He had a thick, Irish accent.

"Pappy was like a leprechaun, daddy, and so are you,"
she replies to my question of why she's recently taken to calling me Pappy.
(Side note:  I'm German, but I can do a pretty good Irish accent that makes her laugh.)

He used to bring her four leaf clovers.
Where he'd find them, I don't know.
Luck of the Irish, I guess.

She has her grandfather's eyes.
Her eyes look nothing like mine.
Or her mother's.

A stereotype Irishman who drank himself to an early death, laughing the whole way.
He was a great man.
It's nice to see him in her eyes.

Cup of Tea

6:45 am

I wake up and and hit the snooze button for 7 minutes and close my eyes.

6:52 am

In my dream, a black dove lands on my knee and looks me directly in the eye just as the alarm goes off.  I've never understood why the alarm goes off, when really it's turning on.  Either way, I turn it off, allowing my cat to rub it's whiskers on my face for two minutes before rolling out of bed.  My left foot always hits the ground first.

6:54 am

I jumped into the shower.  Shampoo.  Rinse.  Wash face.  Apply conditioner.  Grab soap.  Left armpit.  Right armpit.  Cock.  Asshole.  Left foot.  Right foot.  Rinse soap.  Rinse conditioner.  Exit shower.  Floss.  Apply face lotion.  Brush teeth.

7:09 am

I get dressed.  Underwear.  Socks.  Deodorant.  Collared shirt, buttoned up, collar popped. Tie, double windsor knot.  Shirt collar down.  Pants on.  Shirt tucked in.  Pants latched, zipper zipped up.  Belt strapped on one belt loop at a time.  Beatle boots.  Leather watch.  Cuff links from my brother's wedding.  Suit jacket, top button buttoned.  Wool overcoat, all buttons buttoned.  Done.  Today is cold, but still precise.  It always takes me precisely thirty minutes to get dressed.

7:39 am
I moved from the bedroom to the living room, around the couch and into the kitchen.

7:54 am (actual time, 7:40am)

Once I leave the bedroom, I enter into a new time zone, as all of my clocks are set fourteen minutes ahead so as to get me moving.  I knew I would have time to hit up the coffee shop for a buttery almond croissant and quadruple shot of espresso before work, so I skipped the usual routine of 1 tablespoon sunflower butter on a piece of gluten-free toasted bread.

7:55 am

I see a black dove fly across my window as I open the door to the hallway.  I stop for a moment.  This is not how I had planned things.  I think of The Beatles song, "Blackbird," then my beatle boots.  I'm not one for omens or signs.

7:56 am

I walk down my hallway and down the fire escape stairs.  I hate waiting for the elevator.  The fire escape stairs smell like urine from the homeless, but it's efficient.  Precise.  I exit the building and pop my wrist out of my jacket to look at my watch.  A gift from my grandfather.  My grandfather who died last week.  I was the only one at his funeral.  He was part Native American.  He had long black hair.

8:00 am

I'm six minutes ahead of schedule when I open the screen door to my neighborhood coffee shop.  Paul, the comedian who is waiting for his big break, who sits at the same table every morning says, "Word, suit.  Getting the quad again?"  I nod as the door slams behind me from the tightly wound spring hinge.  If I owned this place, I would spray the hinges with WD-40.  But I don't.  So I don't.

8:09 am

I nod hello to Meredith.  Mer.  M.  The Barista.  She has ginger red hair that resembles the flow of Hawaiian lava, blue eyes that are so bright you have to squint to look into them...and a tan.  The tan is only in the sense that her pasty white skin is covered in freckles that have expanded from the sun and are all nearly touching each other. "The regular," she asks.  I nod today the same way I nodded last week.  I have yet to speak today.

8:10 am

With my nod, I order two espressos, knowing that each one comes as a double shot.  I like eating the foam with the tiny spoon.  The hipster with a mustache behind me judges me.  He probably thinks I'm wasting dishwater from using two cups.  Internally, I tell him to shave his face, cause he looks like an idiot, but I remember that I was young once and thought that my stylistic rebellion would matter.  We all end up in suits.

8:27 am

I haven't seen M for a little less than seventeen minutes, as I rounded my last time entry down and this one up.  Approaching me is a teenager.  He has cutoff jeans and long, blonde hair.  It's obvious that he surfs.  I can tell he works here by the way he carries himself, but I don't know who he is.  He's carrying one large mug with a spoon.  Both he and I know that it is my order, but only I know that it's wrong.  I still don't want to talk, so when he places a mug in front of me with a teabag hanging out, I simply stare at it.  I stare at him like he's an idiot, but he's still too young to care what people like me are thinking.  He walks away.  I look back at the mug.  I could pick it up and throw it at the wall.  But I don't.

8:29 am

I'm still staring at the steaming mug of tea.  Angry.  Confused.  Where's M?  Why couldn't the drink in front of me have just been what I ordered.  Or at least only a slight misunderstanding, having put all four shots in one cup?  It was that hipster.  He knew I was judging him.  He sabotaged my order.  He's probably sitting outside smoking a cigarette and laughing at me.    From his point of view, I represent something beyond what I am.  I'm the guy in the suit.  I should grow a mustache.  Like Don what's-his-name, from Miami Vice.  Why do clothes smell better when they're sun-dried?  I feel like drawing.  I haven't drawn since I was a kid. I pick up a pencil and a napkin nearby...

8:51

I stare at my drawing.  Then at the mug.  I don't know what black doves represent.  I leave the drawing under the mug as a statement.  I hate tea.  I will not be back.

8:52

I get up and leave the coffee shop.  On my way out, Paul, the comedian, asks me something about what the toughest thing about something is.  I shrug my shoulders and continue to walk.  I remember that I forgot to order my almond croissant.  Today is no longer precise.  It is chaotic, like the world.

from BLACK to WHITE

First, the boy melted the black

As it dripped he saw sadness, danger, fear, terror, pain.
He saw the demons of his childhood that had taken his innocence.
He smiled, feeling both revenge and closure.

Second, he melted the yellow

He saw happiness, joy, and laughter.
He saw his village gathered around a campfire beating drums and dancing primally.
He smiled.

Third, he melted the red

He found it odd that this one melted slower and the drips were thinner, more watered down.
As it fell he saw anger. Rage. Bloodshed. Death.
He smiled once more, relieved that he was still alive.

But the mood soon changed as he held the white one over the melted carnage.
His smile disappeared and the world around him slowed.

"I'm only following orders,"
the white one pleaded.

The words echoed in his head as he remembered those words being spoken by the American soldier,
gun hanging down by his hip,
justifying himself to the mother who held her elder son in her arms,
his blood soaking through his hair onto his mother's prayer gown.

She wailed while her son died in her arms.

The boy sat there,
locked in that moment,
for what seemed like an entire lifetime,
imagining a life with his brother still alive.

He stood up and laughed, then cried, then laughed again,
The two emotions blending into a cacophony of music.

He turned his back and disappeared into the shadow filled alleyway that lead him home
Leaving behind the black, the yellow, the red...

and the white

He couldn't see it yet.

Every day,
the boy drew his breath deeper into his lungs than he ever had before
and he wished for one thing
and one thing only...

"I want to change the world,"
he would whisper softly as he held tightly onto his dandelion with both hands.

But because he couldn't be more specific than that,
he never saw that every day,
with every dandelion,
with every wish...

his breath would move the clouds
and the sky would dance with the sea
and people who had once been sad would smile.

The power of his breath already had begun to change the world,
and one day he would lead millions.

But he couldn't see it...yet.

Monochromatic Love

Monochromatic.
Black and white isn’t only black and white.
Home isn’t just where your heart is.
And love is deeper than a paper cut.

Memories.
A white crayon on black construction paper.
Remember those dreams, those whispers?

Color.
Black is and white isn’t.
Home is where the sun shines vivid.

Fire.
Home is where smells give stories.
Burnt in your memory are dreams you used to have.

Prismatic.
Rock the red slippers.
It’s the yellow brick road that leads to the emerald city.

Love.
Black and white isn’t only black and white.
Home isn’t just where your heart is.
And love is deeper than a paper cut.
